Merseyside trucking firm drives support for Cancer Research

A truck covered in logos from some of Merseyside’s biggest companies, will now make its way around the UK as part of a charity fundraising drive. JWT Commercial Ltd. encouraged 16 businesses to pledge a minimum donation of £250 to charity North West Cancer Research in exchange for their logo on a special charity-truck.

The Bootle-based trucking company, transports containers from the Port of Liverpool to destinations all over the UK. The DAF XF model truck was officially unveiled at the Truckfest show in Knutsford and will cover an average of 80,000 road miles over the next 12 months. The fundraising drive has raised a total a £4,830 which will help support life-saving cancer research projects at University of Liverpool and across the North West. Businesses who have pledged a donation include: Butterworth Spengler, Briggs Equipment and MTC North West.

Owners of JWT Commercial, Jonathan Whiteley and Tom Gallagher selected North West Cancer Research as the beneficiary of the donations, after hearing of the charity through one of his employees Owen McCann. Owen who is a Commercial director at JWT and is also the current captain of Hurlston Hall Golf Club. The Club has been fundraising for North West Cancer Research for the past nine months, after Owen selected it as his Captain’s Charity this year.

Jonathan Whiteley, said:

“Myself and my business partner Tom Gallagher had the idea of offering one of our trucks up to charity. When we heard about Owen’s Captain’s Charity and the work that North West Cancer Research does in the region, it was an obvious choice.

“Between the three of us we sadly don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by cancer in some way, so we hope that the money we’ve helped raise will help to advance research into this terrible disease. Thank you to all the local businesses who donated to this great cause. The truck looks great and we can’t wait to get it out on the road.”

Owen McCann said:

“Thank you to my employers JWT Commercial for helping boost our fundraising drive for North West Cancer Research. Every year the new captain picks a charity for the Club to support and as captain this year, I knew I wanted to do something related to cancer research. There are several members of the group who have had cancer themselves and all of us know someone who has suffered from it so it seemed a fitting charity to support.”

The money raised will be used by North West Cancer Research to support research projects across the North West including at nearby University of Liverpool. The charity has committed to funding more than £13million worth of research over the next five years.

Alastair Richards, CEO North West Cancer Research, added:

“On behalf of everyone at the charity I would like to thank JWT Commercial and Owen and his golf club for their support. The money they have raised will support life-saving cancer research both here in Merseyside and beyond.”

You can still pledge your support for the charity truck campaign, via Owen’s JustGiving page although the deadline for logos to appear on the truck has now closed.
